2013 in Review (6/7): The Top Thirteen Moments

There's no denying 2013 was a wild, wild ride for Club Penguin players.  But what will go down as the top moment of this thirteenth year of the twenty-first century?

13. Penguin Style February 2013 Cover Controversy

To start out this countdown, we come to what you may find to be a strange selection.  Surely there is something more important than this?  But, no.  I feel this event is important enough to be the least important important event of the year.

Why?  Well, when this cover was posted on the Club Penguin blog, it was met with far more animosity than anything that Club Penguin had put out there before - even takeovers got more love.  Was it a girl?  Was it a boy?  Nobody really knew.  This cover was the tipping point for people already uneasy about the new penguin design, which had been around for a mere month.

This presented Club Penguin with a unique situation.  For the first time ever, they put out a retraction to something they had created; they deleted the blog post and redesigned the cover, tweaking it slightly.

This cover proved just as potent to fans' eyes and thus, Club Penguin completely overhauled the penguin on the cover; this third design ended up being the one that landed online.

Because of this incident, the February 2013 Penguin Style goes down as both the only catalog ever to have two different covers and the only catalog ever to have three different covers.  It could arguably be the most infamous product to come from Club Penguin.

12. Team Members Unfollow and Stop Replying on Twitter; Polo is Kicked Off Twitter

This event, which occurred early in the year, caused waves of controversy throughout numerous jaded penguins.  These actions, which are said to be part of some complicated rule, even locked Polo Field out of his own Twitter account.

To this day, a mention or follow from a team member is a rare delicacy and the rule is the butt of many jokes.

11. Megg and Other Team Members are Introduced to the Club Penguin Community

While this year marked many being shut out by team members due to the event above, we also learned a lot about others who make the Club Penguin world go round.  Through the Club Penguin Summit, The Spoiler Alert, tweets, and blog comments, the world of Club Penguin moderators was opened up to us just a little bit further.

Megg, a limited-time player in the Club Penguin game, was also introduced to us.  Her takeover campaign from this final month has been a major event.  The intern has also had a big role in the creation and production of The Spoiler Alert.

10. For the First Time Ever, There are No New Stage Plays

In 2012, only two new Stage plays debuted.  Even then, one was a spinoff of two existing plays and the other was a small, unofficial one courtesy of Herbert.  This year we didn't get a single one, though.  Ridiculous.

9. Mech Mice Launches Beta and Then Opens Officially

While not exactly a Club Penguin event, this launch is nonetheless significant.  The brainchild of several Club Penguin heavyweights, this game amassed a large following of CP fans before it even opened.  And with an app and a multiplayer game now off the ground, with more things coming, this game will continue to be notable for quite a while.

8. Weekly Series #WaddleOn and The Spoiler Alert are Launched

This year saw Club Penguin embark on a new journey of weekly shows.  First, we got #WaddleOn, a show that had been a concept on Polo Field's laptop for months.  After a well received test run, the show was picked up for a second season, which is currently airing.

The Spoiler Alert came with just month left in the year.  Its future seems to be also bright, as Polo Field has implied they plan to do the show for a long time.

7. CPNext is Announced

CPNext's announcement was one filled with a mix of excitement, confusion, and disappointment. Its format will change the way we play Club Penguin completely.  Its launch, while still far off, is still something that is the front of many peoples' minds.

6. Two New Puffles Arrive, Surprise Everyone

While the surprise of their launches were botched up in my opinion by poor promotion choices, I don't think anyone saw these two puffles coming to the island before their reveal.  These special puffles clearly broke the rules by arriving in the same year (the only other time this happened was in the launch year of puffles), being more than just regular, and making us work for them.  The golden puffles' gold items have also been a hit with penguins - though they've also caused frustration.

5. Billybob Officially Leaves Club Penguin; Spike Hike Becomes Leader

While we had known that this day was coming since 2012, the official event was nonetheless sad, being marked with a going away party (that I attended).  While Billybob is still universally missed, it should be safe to say that Spike Hike has gained respect from penguins all around.  This would have been a higher event on the list had it not been for the fact that we got the foresight of the change in 2012.

4. New Art Design

The new art design, while somewhat related to number thirteen, deserves a slot all its own.  It has completely changed the way we see Club Penguin.  From newspapers to catalogs to characters, everything was different.  Many didn't like it.

3. The Party Starts Now CD is Released

This CD release marked both a new territory of merchandise for Club Penguin and one of the only times in the past few years that a piece of Club Penguin merchandise was made widely available.

2. My Penguin is released for iPad, Is Then Rebooted Dramatically

The initial launch of the app in May marked a new era for Club Penguin.  However, the name change and ambitious online porting project that launched this month was equally as important.  This app will continue to be a news maker for quite a while, with an Android and iPhone/iPod Touch version on the way and the promise that eventually every room and party will be in the app.

1. Businesmoose Leaves the Club Penguin Team

After launching this blog in February, the thought of a year in review countdown had already floated into my head.  So, in March, I knew that no matter what else happened this year, this event would be number one (unless someone else leaving became an event, which would then be in a tie with this).

When I first read Businesmoose blog post, my heart dropped.  Because, after hearing from a person so much, you feel like you know them; you don't want to say goodbye.

This event was particularly jarring, given the fact that Happy77's departure and Billybob's resignation was still so fresh in our minds.  It was also surprising given the fact that Polo Field and Businesmoose had only just become a fixture on the blog and social media a few short months before.

Another layer that made it even more sad was that Polo Field and Businesmoose seemed like a duo.  Back in the day, you rarely said something about one without mentioning the other.  If one was featured in a video, the other one was almost certainly around too.  In fact, #WaddleOn was originally The Moose and Polo Show.  The two still remain friends to this day, but I just felt sadness for the breaking of the partnership.

And, to add insult to injury, Businesmoose took his short-lived site off the web and deleted all the content from his Twitter account.  So much for memory lane.

Still, Businesmoose now lives a new life as Mech Moose.  He can still be found on Twitter (he might even follow and respond!) and on various other Mech Mice affiliated windows (he is the head blogger at Mech Mice, after all).  He still tweets about Club Penguin and occasionally meets up with team members that still remain with the site.  He even logs on from time to time.  But, it's just not the same.  I feel so distanced from him now days.  His chapter in my book seems to be having writer's block; I only hear from him ever so often on the Mech Mice blog and Twitter.  We miss you, Moose.  We miss you.

  1. Very nice blog post! I liked the mention you made of Rookie at the end :P

On a side note, this isn't the first time two puffles have been released in the same year. In 2006 when they launched Blue, Black, Green, and Pink Puffles were released, and later Red and Purple that same year. But it is still notable for being the first time since Puffles launched for doing that.

    1. Thanks for the compliment! Also, thank you for reminding me about the puffle launch thing - I meant to be more descriptive but ended up forgetting to include that info. I've updated the post with credit to you! Thanks again!
