Review: Teen Beach Movie Summer Jam 2013

The final takeover party of 2013 is here.  It's received nothing short of critical praise.  But do I agree with the fanfare around it?

The rooms at this party are as incredible as any other party.  Only two of them - the Snow Forts and Big Momma's - are based on Teen Beach Movie.  They are good representations of the film.  The highway and surfing rooms are deserving of particular acclaim, with a very unique feel to them.  There is even a petition to keep them, which I hope works.

However, I do feel that more rooms could have been decorated.  Not a single interior on Club Penguin Island has any decorations (not counting Big Momma's, of course) and the Ski Village and Ski Hill, two rooms that rarely remain plain, maintain their regular Club Penguin designs for this party (that's three parties in a row!).

Another aspect of the party is the special Mack and Brady performance every twenty minutes at Big Momma's.  The animation done here is pretty good.  And, the song used, which is directly from the movie, is a good one.  It really is a nice touch.

Speaking of music, this party is brimming with it.  Being a replacement for the Music/Ultimate Jam, this makes sense.  There is a nice blend of new and returning music, which is spectacular.

This party really feels like an "old" takeover.  In my classification, those are the Marvel Superhero Takeover's in 2012 and 2013 and the Ultimate Jam: Make Your Mark party of July of last year, which included Shake It Up characters CeCe and Rocky as mascots.  These first three Disney tie-in parties were very subtle in their use of external properties - the 2012 Marvel party only had Marvel costumes, the 2013 one had only costumes and three rooms with direct ties to Marvel, and the Ultimate Jam's only ties to Rocky and CeCe were the buy-able costumes and mascots of the characters.  Meanwhile the "new" takeovers - the Monsters University Takeover and the Star Wars Takeover - were very property oriented; there was very little that was original Club Penguin.

However, this party only has a few costumes, two mascots, two songs (one with lyrics and one without), and two rooms which have a direct tie to the DCOM this party finds its origins in.  The rest is all Club Penguin.

The items at this party are pretty good.  The costumes that are based on the movie are all good representations of the characters and their possessions.  The other strictly Club Penguin ones are also worthy of praise.

As with Marvel, Shake It Up, Monsters University, and Star Wars, the characters are well transferred from their original form to penguin form.  They are instantly recognizable and look really nice.

One gripe I have with this party is with the mascots.  While the trio (Brady, McKenzie, and Cadence) are a good choice (I do think the Penguin Band should have come though), their schedule is not.  Mack and Brady's online time has been scarce.  They need to be on more.

Then there's what there is to do.  And, really, there isn't much once you are done exploring the rooms and all the nooks and crannies of the party.  You can search for mascots.  You can come back each day and get a new item.  You can save up your coins to buy things from the party catalog.  You can role-play.  That's it.

Now don't get me wrong, I love this party as much as the next guy, but after months of having quests and party games to keep us busy at monthly events, I feel a little underwhelmed.  Club Penguin's mission with this party was to make it classic and to that I say, "Mission: Accomplished."

What's so surprising about these turn of events is that this party has been the most popular one this year.  While I know people always talk about missing old Club Penguin, I thought people might respond negatively to the lack of innovative features after what we've been treated to over these past few months.  But no.  Everyone absolutely loves it.  The message seems to be that when it comes to Club Penguin, make it simple.  This is pretty much the exact opposite in every other territory in life.

Now, let me be clear.  Once again, I love this party.  And, while apart of me feels a bit underwhelmed compared to other months, apart of me likes this classic, nostalgic feel.  And, the lack of things to do really becomes irrelevant when you consider this is the shortest party in recent memory.

So, in closing this party is great.  As with any party, it has its flaws.  But it's still an amazing spectacle from the miracle-workers more commonly known as the Club Penguin Team (OK, I might have gotten a little carried away on that last sentence :p).  I would love for it to come back next year.  And the year after that. And the year after that.  And the year---

  1. I really really liked this party. I think it may even rival Marvel for best party of 2013!
