Beach Backlash

Tensions have been high in the last few months in the Club Penguin Community.  After three Disney parties in four months, players have been a bit perturbed.  And, while all of these parties have been well-received on the whole, with each new one, the annoyance seems to grow.

And now, after some rumors (which were correct), we know there will be a fourth Disney party  - a summer music party to tie-in with the new DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie) Teen Beach Movie.  Understandably, due to previous events of this nature, the response isn't all positive.  You could say this is the boiling point (although some called the Star Wars controversy that).

But, this time, things feel different...

Why do things feel different, you ask?  Well, a few weeks ago, Spike Hike took to a Club Penguin Memories post filled with people's opinions of how good of a job Club Penguin has been doing with updates so far this year.  In it, he said (in part)...

"...On the Takeover parties, we hear you. For the record, we don’t do them for advertising purposes, we do them because we think they are awesome and will be a lot of fun and it would sort of be criminal to have access to awesome things like Star Wars and not do something with it. A large part of the audience really enjoys them and they are some of our most successful events on the last few years..." (Courtesy of Club Penguin Memories)

In the quote, Spike says that they don't do Disney parties for advertising reasons, they do them because they genuinely want to use the material and the audience likes the properties.  I completely believe what he says.

But now, not to bash Club Penguin or Spike Hike, I see a little plot-hole in this.  Let me explain.

Club Penguin has been given the rights to five Disney products since last year.  Three of them - Marvel, Monsters University, and Star Wars - fit with Spike's quote that they like the properties they make parties for and want to use them in Club Penguin.  These three brands are highly popular and established - adults really enjoy them as well.  And, if Polo Field is to believed in his Monsters University Takeover announcement blog post, the Club Penguin Team had been wanting to work with Pixar for years.

Another one, Shake It Up, doesn't go on the same principal as the last three.  Sure, some adults like it, but its not a real hot commodity to many of them.  But bringing CeCe and Rocky into the game still makes sense for non-advertising purposes.  Here's a quote from Billybob in a Marvel Superhero Takeover 2012 sneak-peek post from June of that year, that may shed some light on why it makes sense...

"...Ever since we first started Club Penguin, we've had a lot of requests for Super Hero costumes, like The Avengers: Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye.

So, we partnered with our friends at Marvel to make that a reality!..." (Courtesy of the Official Club Penguin What's New Blog)

Shake It Up premiered towards the end of 2010.  So, it makes sense that over about a year and a half Club Penguin got some requests for it from rabid Disney Channel fans just as Marvel fans did.

But, now we come to number five: Teen Beach Movie.  This is where things appear to fall apart.

Teen Beach Movie premiered on July 19, 2013.  But, it was before that that we got our first hint that the characters of the film were coming to Club Penguin.  This of course means there wouldn't have been time for anyone to request it meaning that possibility is out.  And, the Club-Penguin-Team-wanting-to-use-the-material theory gets shot down when you consider 1) some adults might like this movie, but it's no Star Wars or Monsters University and 2) they'd have to had started working on the party before the movie was released meaning they couldn't be fans of the movie - they might have seen it early for work purposes, but otherwise, they wouldn't have.

But, even if it is for advertising, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.  The party will be released more than a month after the movie premiered.  Sure, there would be rebroadcasts, some merchandise, and DVDs to get people pumped for, but that's not much.  Unless Disney is trying to just generally market Disney Channel or is hoping that when you watch it when it airs again you'll see commercials for shows that you'll then watch, the marketing thing doesn't really fit either.  It doesn't seem like a product that Disney, if they were trying to market through our beloved site, would tell Club Penguin to put in one of their parties.

So, why are they crossing Teen Beach Movie into Club Penguin?  The only plausible reason I can think of is that Club Penguin figured this movie would be popular and decided to put it in their game.  That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

To start to wrap things up, I have to say I still believe Spike Hike when he says Club Penguin isn't trying to advertise.  He wouldn't lie to us.

And, if you are totally against Disney parties, listen to (or read, I guess) this: Spike Hike had something else interesting to say in his Club Penguin Memories opinion post comment:

"...Only 4 of our parties out of 12 this year have a Disney tie-in..." (Courtesy of Club Penguin Memories)

Now count with me, people: 1) the Marvel Superhero Takeover 2013; 2) the Disney/Pixar Monsters University Takeover; 3) the Star Wars Takeover; and 4) the "Teen Beach Movie Takeover" (name to be announced).  After this one, you're home free of Takeover parties, anti-Disney-synergy people!  That is, until 2014, if there are any.  And even then, you'll probably be a bit happier because Spike Hike also said in that post that they would be spread the Disney parties out more if there were any next year.

Even if it is Teen Beach Movie themed, I have to say I'm excited for this party.  It's from Club Penguin.  That should be all I need to say.
