The Canon Conundrum

Ever since the first Marvel Takeover was announced in 2012, I have tried to figure out how other worlds fit into Club Penguin canon.  In this post, I will try and figure that out for all previous takeovers and face how Star Wars fits in - which may be the hardest one of them all to explain.

Marvel
Marvel's existence in the Club Penguin canon is pretty easy to distinguish.  The parties' story-lines have been you can suit up as superheros or super-villains to help the city or the robots.  Thus, the existence of Iron Man or the Black Widow on Club Penguin Island is only in costume form.  Penguins have created costumes for the use of defending or destroying the island.  They may have been inspired to create these costumes, along with buildings like Stark Tower and the Avengers' Helicarrier, by the heroes that exist in the stories.  Given it has the Marvel subtitle, the Penguins must have named the party after the stories.

Verdict: Does not exist in Club Penguin's world; Penguins were inspired by the stories

Shake It Up
This one's pretty set in stone - CeCe and Rocky exist as penguins in this world.  They are from a different island but none-the-less, they are real characters in Club Penguin canon.  Their human counterparts just don't exist.

Verdict: Does exist in the Club Penguin universe - but Club Penguin'ified

Innocent Smoothies
The members of the Innocent Smoothies Gang are the official mascots of the U.K. based company.  They do exist in Club Penguin's history, as Rockhopper met them on another island in a "prequel" story released by the smoothie company before the Island Adventure Party: Temple of Fruit in August 2012.

Verdict: Does exist in the Club Penguin universe; Has same form there as in the real World

Monsters University/ Monsters Inc.
No characters from the Pixar franchise exist on Club Penguin, as there were no property specific mascots at the party.  The party committee probably just saw the films and decided to make an event around it.  After all, the party is called the Disney/Pixar Monsters University Takeover, so they named it after the movie.

Star Wars
Now comes the big one.  The confusing one.

You see, never before has Club Penguin crossed their characters over with established characters from another property.  But, this time they have.  We have Sensei as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Cadence as Princess Leia (here dubbed Princess Cadence), and Herbert P. Bear as Darth Herbert.  These are all great representations of the Star Wars characters in Club Penguin form, but I have one question to ask - What!!??

Source: Club Penguin Wikia

How does it work that Cadence was on another planet, became a princess there, and then called back for help, all while still hosting Dance Contest in her normal form?  Is Princess Cadence a long lost relative from another planet - who speaks and looks like the Cadence we know and love?

And, what about Sensei as Obi-Wan Kenobi?  Is this Sensei-Kenobi just a lost cousin of Sensei's from another planet?

Then there's Herbert, who happens to be the hard one of the group to figure out.  During the Star Wars Takeover, there's Darth Herbert, who has to be the Herbert we know of.  Why?  Well, Polo Field said in a tweet before the Star Wars party announcement that "Herbert may be up to something."  This turn as Darth Herbert has to be that "something".  Thus, Darth Herbert is Herbert P. Bear.

But, this raises some more questions.  How did he become caught up with people from another planet?  How did he get on the Death Star?  How did he rise to become a powerful force in the Empire?  Where's Klutzy (is he behind a Stormtrooper mask)?

With all this information in mind, I think I have a theory.

----
Herbert P. Bear failed to use stolen sauce to power his new machine in Operation: Hot Sauce in early April of this year.  After his defeat by the EPF, he heard penguins talking about playing Super Hero Bounce during the Marvel Superhero Takeover 2013 later that month.  While listening, he may have became privy to some valuable info - that there were other planets up in space.  With this information, he may have deduced that other people lived in other realms of space.  People who could become his servants.  Who could help him reach his final ultimatum.

Thus, he may have used the scraps from his failed hot sauce invention (which we saw floating on the water through the Cove's binoculars after Operation: Hot Sauce) and built a spaceship (the ship may have even run on the crystals that gave power during the Marvel party).

He blasted into space and met up with the Galactic Empire, where the Emperor made Herbert his next apprentice because perhaps he saw potential in our polar bear adversary.  Or perhaps he wanted to use Herbert to take over another planet - the planet that had Herbert's former, cold, unfortunate home.  Club Penguin.

Thus, Herbert and the Galactic Empire started to approach Club Penguin.  R2-D2 (in the Club Penguin canon as a puffle with a mechanical hat) arrived on Club Penguin after being sent by Princess Cadence of the Rebel Alliance.  There he relayed a recorded message from the Princess: her home planet was in trouble and only Club Penguin could help.  The Rebel Alliance was to land on Club Penguin to help the cause and the battle was about to come to Club Penguin's front door mat - courtesy of Darth Herbert, The Emperor, and the rest of the Empire.

And so, us penguins began to build a Rebel Base for the resistance to land on and began to see a Death Star and accompanying ships approach in the skies once the Monsters University party finished.  After a week, the construction of the base progressed and with it, the journey of the Empire.  And now, the battle will begin this week...

So, now that I'm off my story rampage, I think you can see I've come up with a plausible story-line to explain why Herbert is now Darth Herbert and all of what comes with it.  Now, is the whole "Herbert built a spaceship" thing and all of the other details connecting the story probably official Club Penguin fare?  No.  Club Penguin is probably just saying, "Herbert's in space with Star Wars characters.  Now accept that and let's get this party started!!"  But, at least I have something that ties the plot together.

Now it's time for the big question.  Does Star Wars exist in Club Penguin canon?  The answer is a resounding yes.  Characters from Star Wars, albeit in penguin form, are coming to Club Penguin.  Thus, Star Wars exists in the outer-space of Club Penguin lore - just not in the way we know of it.

The characters that are human in the Star Wars we know, are penguins in the Club's version.  The droids and animals may also slightly differ, although some might be almost, if not the same in both versions.  Also, characters such as Princess Leia, and Obi-Wan Kenobi do not exist in the universe.  Instead, Club Penguin character versions of these Star Wars people exist.  All of the costumes and items available at the party are inspired by "real" people and things from the Star Wars in the Club Penguin universe.

Also, I believe Princess Cadence and Obi-Wan Kenobi/Sensei are long lost relatives of the characters we know on Club Penguin, not the same people.  My evidence to back this is that Club Penguin said Herbert would be the mascot at this party - but did not confirm Cadence and Sensei.  The Herbert confirmation makes sense because Herbert = Darth Herbert.  But, if the same were to be said about Cadence and Sensei's Star Wars versions, wouldn't they be waddling around?  Cadence and Sensei not being meet-able on the island during the party only makes sense if they - the characters we have known for years - have nothing to do with Star Wars.  This would mean their relatives do.  These Star Wars characters merely act, look, and talk similar to their mascot relatives who live on Club Penguin Island.

---
UPDATE: In the Ask Sensei section of several Club Penguin Times issues during the party, Obi-Wan says Darth Herbert fell to the Dark Side in the same way he did in the films - over several years and after a series of different events.  This doesn't make sense since Herbert could have only joined The Empire during or after April of this year.  So, to make sense of this, I believe Herbert somehow captured Darth Vader and locked him away in a remote area.  He then took over Darth Vader's position and pretended to be Anakin.  He demanded to be renamed Darth Herbert, saying he, as Anakin, had a change of heart as far as the name was concerned.  The Emperor may have noticed the change in Darth Vader and went along with it, seeing potential in Herbert.  He may have also been fooled by the polar bear.  He obviously fooled Obi-Wan Sensei, as shown in the newspaper.

This may help explain how this part of the plot works.

Verdict: Real in the Club Penguin universe - but Club Penguin'ified
