The 2013 Monsters University Dissection (1/2)

As I did with Marvel (part one; part two), it is time to dissect the rooms, items, and other features of the Monsters University Takeover in what may perhaps become my longest post ever.

* Please note: For some of the pictures I couldn't get exact screenshots from the films so you'll have to take my word for it.

1. At the Town there are some giant footprints in the snow.  This may be referencing Mike and Sulley's walk to work at the beginning of the first movie where they stop and say high to a giant dinosaur like creature.

2. The now iconic Monsters University archway is located in the Snow Forts.  It greatly resembles its film counterpart.  There is also a background for this in the Penguin Style catalog.

3. A wooden board shows the current positions of the four teams in the Snow Forts and other areas.  The same board is used for the Scare Games in the movie.

4. The bus stop at the Snow Forts is seen twice in Monsters University.  It is the place where Mike arrives and leaves Monsters University.

5. At the Courtyard between the Snow Forts and the Soccer Pitch there are two club sign up areas.  The first to the right, an astronomy club, is seen very fleetingly in the film in a slightly different position.

6. The area to the left of the previous group is an art club.  It is seen in the prequel for a few more seconds than the previous sign up booth, all though it too is in a different position in the theater.

7. You see that board next to the last booth?  The making of the design on it is seen in the movie and many of its trailers when a shaggy monster plops his head in some paint and then knocks his head against the board, making a masterpiece in the process. (optional jokes to follow this: one - I'll start the bidding at $2,000!; two - The yellow puffles would be proud!)

8. The guitar center next to the area in number six and seven is also seen in the movie, albeit in a different place completely.  During a chase for the scare pig of Fear Tech towards the beginning of the movie, Sulley plows through some students listening to a guy playing his guitar (and singing, if I remember correctly) on a hill by a tree.  In the process James P. Sullivan knocks him over and gives the listeners a fright (he apologizes, I believe).

9. The arches seen in several rooms, including the Campus Quad (Scare Games Center) are from the film.

10. The grass color, sidewalk stone, stairs, pathway stone, and other exterior designs seen all around the campus match the movie's versions of these perfectly.

11. There are several lamp posts (with blue banners on the side) around the grounds.  They are also in the back drop of the film.

12. Several other buildings are seen in the background of the campus both in the game and on film.  They are the same colors and shapes in each.  There are also a variety of different colored trees in each.

13. The Scarer Classroom, which can be entered at the courtyard between the Snow Forts and Soccer Pitch, looks the same inside and out on Club Penguin as it does in the movie.

14. There are two statues outside of number thirteen's classroom.  These statues look very similar in the film.  Students actually touch one of them for good luck, as shown on the first day of classes in the movie.

15. Inside the classroom of number thirteen, several busts of well known monsters, with scare cans in front of them, are seen in the film.  Three of them have made their way into Club Penguin.  One is of Dean Hardscrabble, whose costume is also available (of the other two: one is slightly obscured by the makeshift bedroom and the other is an unnamed monster).  In front of her bust is a full scare can (the other two are empty).  This can actually has some pretty interesting back-story.  The story goes that it was this can of energy that allowed the Dean (who then worked at Monsters, Inc.) to break the all time scare record.  The can also has a major part in the main story as well.

16. The classroom from the last three notes has similar seats, interior design (with the windows, color, wood, and pillars), chalk board, robot, makeshift bed, and door in both mediums.

17. The boat and river at the Campus Quad is also seen in the prequel.  Students actually row the boat under the arched bridge above the lake in the film.

18. The Scare Challenge makeshift bedroom in the Campus Quad looks similar to the film's version of this.  There is also a white line in front of it - which is actually significant.  In the movie there are two bedroom areas, one for each of the final teams.  One member from each team waits at the line each round.  Once they are told they can go, the two race to their respective rooms.  They then proceed to scare the child robot to the best of their ability, just as is done in the Scare Game mini-game.  A score board with two scare cans tally the results and then the next person from each team goes.  The team whose scare meter is the highest once all members have their turn wins.

19. Fraternity Row has all of the team's dwellings next to each other, with each exterior mirroring the movie's version.  While the next-door-neighbor set-up is true in the movie for the ROR, PNK, and JOX groups, the OK house, which is Squishy and his mother's residence, is outside the campus in a neighborhood.

20. Speaking of Oozma Kappa's home, the Squibbles' address is mirrored perfectly in Club Penguin.  From the seats to the lamps, along with china in the display case, the grandfather clock, and everything in between, this room is a great representation of the Pixar's original vision.

21. JOX's place of residence is seen very briefly in the film, but from what I saw in my viewing this interpretation is accurate.  The paddle table and its related objects are seen in the movie and are here and in the Better Igloos catalog.  Some other objects also make very "blink and you'll miss it" moments in the film.

22. The ROR home, where Ninja and Loustik005 reside, is a replica of the residence seen in the movie during a wild college party takes place.  The interior design, fire place, windows, chandeliers, party lights, and other items all make an appearance in cinemas.

23. Also, as far as Disney references go, is that a Mickey Mouse nod shined by party lights on the floor of ROR's home?

24. And then, on the front of Underwater Adventure being at the Stage, is that a nod to Pixar's Nemo franchise?

25. Another less obvious (and maybe unintentional) reference is found at the Coffee Shop and the Pizza Parlor (dubbed "The Growl") and the latter's Penguin Style background.  Both take on a retro 70's/80's look.  Given that Monsters, Inc. came out in 2001 and that this film takes place a considerable amount of time before the events of the original, could CP and Pixar be trying to date the movie?

26. The mini-game for the party takes a lot of its ideas from the final event of the Scare Games.  The robot (albeit a human) is in the film.  There are various toys on the floor that try to trip monsters up in the film as well, which explains the trains' inclusions.  There's also a file at the beginning of the outside the door whose purpose in the film is to tell the monster what type of child they are dealing with.  And the room's look changes slightly every round in the prequel, just as it does (perhaps a little more drastically) in the game.  And, there's also the scare can board, which is also in the movie, although it looks somewhat different and is in a different place.

27. In a picture in The Club Penguin Times Issue 401 and the Scare Games mini-game, there is a toy army man floating to the ground with a parachute.  Could this be referring to Sarge and his group of toy army men in the Toy Story series?

28. The scare can icon on the side of your screen (and other places) is a reference to the all important object in both Pixar films.

(Oh, and as a side note, isn't the position of the can next to Rainbow Puffle Cannon at the Puffle Hotel Rooftop a little ironic?)

29. A Scare Games trophy similar to the one in Club Penguin is seen very briefly towards the end of the movie.

30. At the Town, there is a film tower in the background.  Could this be referencing the the party's movie roots?

31. The Better Igloos June 2013 edition includes a plethora of Monsters inspired furniture.  Here is the complete list:

- The pillar and archway featured in the catalog is seen on campus both at the party and in the film.

- The buffet is seen very briefly at the lunch rooms at the University and then at Monster, Inc. in the prequel film, although it is not featured at the party.  Trash is also on the menu in the film.

- The monster station and scare can both are featured prominently in both films, although the scare station is not seen at the party.

- Remember how I mentioned in number eighteen and twenty-six that there was a scoreboard in both the film and the mini-game at the party during the final Scare Games event?  Well, the scoreboard seen in Better Igloos is actually a closer representation to the film's scoreboard than the mini-game's.

- The table, rug, and shelves shown below are all seen in the film at the library.  Even the little spikes on the shelves are from the film!

- The bleachers, boombox, pendants and signs are all seen in the movie.

- While the pommel horse and trophy shelf are returning CP furniture items, they are seen in the prequel.  Like I mentioned before, the Monsters Ping Pong Table is also in the film.

32. In the Club Penguin Times Issue 402, the main article mentions that an OK student was practicing to hide in a couch cushion.  In the film, there is a Scare Games hiding challenge.

33. In the same issue as 32, Aunt Arctic says she routes for the underdog team and really likes cake.  This is referring to the OK fraternity who are the underdogs when compared to the other groups.  In the film, they are also shown to have cake at their signup stand.

Part two (the characters) will be out soon...

As Billybob would say...Waddle On!
