Apprehensive

Polo Field recently stated that the team has been working on a brand new app.  But, I'm a bit skeptical.

It has been thirteen months since Club Penguin launched their flagship mobile app.  In that time, they have implied that they plan for it to be a copy of the online game, with a few little improvements here and there.  However, with the news that there is a second (technically fourth) app in the works, this is all tipped on its head.

If the Club Penguin app were still named My Penguin, a second companion app might make sense.  My Penguin would allow for users to play a few simple games, buy clothes, and customize their penguin.  Other apps could be released in order to give us more complex, bigger games.

But since the rebranding of the app to Club Penguin, the team has locked themselves into something bigger.  The name "Club Penguin" implies that the whole CP experience is present in the app.  And, while, again, that definitely seems to be Club Penguin's master plan, this acknowledgement of a new, separate app throws a wrench into this concept.

Sure, Polo could have just meant that the team is working on the next update for the Club Penguin app, but his wording seems to be pretty definitive.

So, what could this mystery app be?  Could it be the "Project: Super Secret" Spike Hike referenced in his recent "I've got a lot on my plate" post on the What's New Blog?  Could it be one of the apps mentioned on the web page of an outside app developer that confirmed a Card-Jitsu app had been worked on, a fact that was later denied by Spike Hike himself?

My best guess is that this new app is a mobile extension - or, more likely, reboot - of that old parent Facebook application that allowed a guardian to view the stats of their children's penguins and send them gifts.  This extension would make complete sense because it - unlike a game like Card-Jitsu - would not fit if it was put in the regular app.

The true answer?  Time will tell.  Until then, I'm a bit "app"rehensive when it comes to giving a thumbs up to a series of Club Penguin apps when one seems to do the job.

As Billybob would say, Waddle On!
