Review: Turbo Race 3000

After the first two mini-events of 2014 proved to be some of the best additions to Club Penguin this year, can the team keep the momentum going?

The answer is both yes and no.  Simply put, this party is fun, but it hits a few sour notes (a phrase which I probably should've used for my Music Jam review, but, yeah...).

To start off with, the room is not as imaginative as the past events.  Funny Hat Week didn't have grand design, but it still had colorful and appealing decorations.  Prom had a great school design and a bonus outside makeover that added a nice, small touch.  This party, however, isn't as creative with its design.  There's the cliched winner's podium and a couple of outside decorations.  But, then, everything else is so boring.  The room is overwhelmed with gray and other plain colors, and there isn't much vibrance to be seen.  Now, yes, race tracks are gray, but still, there could have been colorful ads around the track or something.  The throwback to the old Stadium is welcome, though.  Additionally, the little details on the ground, the variety of cars, and the slight complexity of the track design is appreciated, too.

The music at this party lags behind the rest as well.  Whereas Funny Hat Week had a lively throwback tune and the Prom included a mix of sounds from across many Club Penguin parties, this party has alright music mixed with sounds that are seemingly placed at random.  It's not bad, but it's not catchy either.

The two items at the party are nice enough, but I don't see me wearing them that much.  *Forrest Gump voice* And that's all I have to say about that.

The actual activity at this party is the true cause of fun here.  Too often do parties give us small mini-games that are far too easy and make you play them over and over again.  Here, the event is fun but not mandatory.  Sure what's here is quite simple, but at least there's some element of challenge.  The game is very responsive and the fact that you don't bring up a person's playercard when you click on them when they are on the track is worth some praise.  It is a shame that A) the start time is dependent on only you and you can start early, so, unless you and your friends coordinate things, it's not really a fair race and B) you're not told who wins for this reason, which would add a new, neat level of interactivity to the mix.  However, this activity is nice for what it's worth.

In closing, the Turbo Race 3000 is a neat little thing to keep our attention on Club Penguin.  It's not amazing, but, it's great for what it's worth.  There are more problems here than at other mini-parties, but that doesn't mean there is no fun to be had.

Score: 6/10

  1. You make some good points. :) Here's what I think:

    Storyline:
It had a storyline, but really, we don't get to know the precise details about it. Do we really care about the invention if we're left with "who knows what we'll use these karts for in the future"? All that suggests at a lack of engagement from players to characters to influence the storyline. It would be better if we could actually "suggest" what the karts could be used for.

    Replay factor:
Testing the karts would only be a one time deal for me. A good event will give you that "replay factor" that wants you to play again because it's so fun. Unfortunately, this does not have this replay factor as it's just driving a kart in one room which doesn't even turn smoothly. It would be interesting if we could actually "steer" the kart instead of having to go in specific directions.

Along with that, there should be a wider scope of a race track. The Stadium is not enough. A good test track will have wider roads. Note how the pit stop is hardly distinct.

Another thing that could be improved is the customization factor. If we could customize our karts, that would lead to more interest to bring out that replay factor.

    Innovation:
As Chillin43 mentioned, I liked how you couldn't bring up a player's Player Card while that player is on the track, which enabled for undeniably easier racing on the track. However, "...it is a shame that A) the start time is dependent on only you and you can start early, so, unless you and your friends coordinate things, it's not really a fair race, and B) you're not told who wins for this reason". Being told who won the race would make for a robust interest into testing the Turbo Race 3000.

The music wasn't very innovative either. It would be far more interesting if the music for the event was more original, creative, which would encapsulate that thrill to race.

The items weren't innovative either. It would be interesting if the items were more original and creative, like if it had an "outstanding" or "special dance". Like Chillin43 said: "The two items at the party are nice enough, but I don't see me wearing them that much." I would've preferred them in a different color personally, and that's where customization could have come in for more innovation.

    Decorations:
I couldn't have said it better than Chillin43: "This party, however, isn't as creative with its design. There's the cliched winner's podium and a couple of outside decorations. But, then, everything else is so boring. The room is overwhelmed with gray and other plain colors, and there isn't much vibrance to be seen." For a vibrant effect, some more thrilling colors would have to be used. Grey does not really give you that "lively feeling", and therefore wasn't really suitable for the color scheme of the party.
