The Old, The Updated, and The Fifty Messages

Club Penguin has altered a lot of classic things over the years.  But were they needed?  And what does need updating?

Earlier this year Club Penguin seemed to turn over a new leaf - with new penguin designs, functions, and a general all around new feel.  This has been something Club Penguin has been working at for years.  As technology progressed and as Disney allowed new resources to be opened to the Team, the game has gradually become the complex, multi-layered bottle of greatness we now know of.

But while people always seem to say, "We want old CP back," there seems to be another problem with updates that might be a little more subtle - the cannon of Club Penguin meshing together.  Now, I am a person who loves the canon of my favorite things.  The more information I'm given about something, the better.  However, I'm also someone who gets annoyed when information given from an official source doesn't connect right with what we already know.

This is why the fact that Ice Fishing includes a classic, rough around the edges penguin and Smoothie Smash features an updated one makes no sense.  There's also the fact that the oldest penguin designs can be seen in some of the books of the Book Room Club Penguin Times Office, the middle design can still be seen in Snow and Sports, and the new design can be seen in Penguin Style.  There's no bridge - no story element that explains the inconsistencies.

But does that mean update everything?  Well, I don't know.  If everything was updated, it would make more sense, but don't we kind of want to hold onto the nostalgia of classic CP?

And then there are the older games that have been updated; Bean Counters was altered slightly whereas Hydro Hopper has been the same since 2007.  Why update one game and not the other?

The last thing is what needs to be updated.  Whereas the Friends List was updated awhile back to hold five hundred friends and the Chat Log now acts like a smartphone and guesses what you are trying to say, some Club Penguin functions have stayed the same for far too long.  The Tour Guide Booth and Tour Guides in general?  Aside from the location of the Booth, that function has been the same since launch way back when (not counting the change in descriptions of rooms at parties).  The Mailing System?  It can only hold fifty messages!  I haven't received a postcard in years, aside from paychecks, because I'm saving "rare" ones, such as the Penguin Play Awards and Medieval ones that Club Penguin itself sent every player way back when (why don't they do that anymore?  I felt it was cool when they did that).  I miss logging in and seeing one from a buddy.  Put on top of this that the catalog hasn't updated with truthfully "new" postcards in years and you have a somewhat outdated feature.

These features, among others, don't have a ton of evidence supporting an update for them - nor do they have any against one.  They could be updated at any random time - like the igloo updates of last year.  The only one that has evidence for updates is Penguin Mail - and even that breadcrumb may be false.

Spike Hike once said that Club Penguin was working on a private chat system for their site, though they canceled it for safety reasons.  This update could have included Penguin Mail.  Maybe part of the purposed update is salvageable and could lead to an update of our mail system?  Or is that just wishful thinking?

Club Penguin is a big universe.  I have no clue what direction they are heading in.  I don't know exactly where I want them to go.  I just know that I'm along for the ride.  They aren't getting rid of me anytime soon.
