Earlier this month a takeover featuring characters from Disney's second Planes movie was confirmed.....but not for Club Penguin, Disney's only remaining virtual world.
No, there was a Planes takeover on Bin Weevils.....the direct competitor of Club Penguin.
What's up with that?
The most obvious explanation for this is that Bin Weevils is simply targeted at younger kids on the whole. If you look at Club Penguin's website, you'll find that the site is designed for six to fourteen year olds. Bin Weevils, meanwhile, is instead made for five to eleven year olds.
This fact is significant because the Planes franchise is made for younger children. Unlike the Cars series that it was spun-off from, which was created with kids, teens, and adults in mind, the Planes movies are made by a whole different group of developers who specialize in content primarily for younger kids. Now, this is not to say that Planes or its sequel can't be enjoyed by the older crowd; it's just not the intention of the filmmakers for such an event to happen. Meanwhile, every single takeover that has been on Club Penguin (Marvel, Shake It Up, Monsters University, Star Wars, Teen Beach Movie, the Muppets, and Disney Channel singers) have their sights focused, in some cases, exclusively, on the tween crowd.
Because of the older start and older finish for the Club Penguin age range, Disney must have figured there would be more potential impact with their marketing if they went to another virtual world.
Now, this is not to say that the Planes characters will most certainly never come to Club Penguin. I believe that if there is a Cars takeover (which is a personal dream of mine and one that could come true since Cars merchandise is insanely popular, there are short films with the characters still coming out, and a third movie is in the works), Disney will also throw in the Planes characters. Double promotion at one party!
However, Disney luring potential players of Club Penguin away from the site and into the arms of the competition is frankly baffling. Either they 1) think Bin Weevils isn't much of a threat, 2) didn't market the event on their own site, so few new players would find out about it and only the current Bin Weevils players would see it, thus creating more interest in the movie and Disney itself (which, who knows, could lead to signing up for Club Penguin), 3) feels both sites can coexisit, or 4) paid a very cheap price for the tie-in. There are lots of things about the entertainment industry the outside does not know about, and advertising is one of the great mysteries that come from it. Then again, what do I know; Disney XD sometimes shows commercials of Nickelodeon stuff, so it's really just a guessing game.
Yeah......good luck figuring this one out!
As Billybob would say, Waddle On!
