Review: Future Party

2014 has been arguably one of the most disappointing years for parties ever.  But, could the Future Party turn that around?

First of all, the music at this party was fairly good.  Thinking back after less than a month, there are no true stand-out songs that come to mind.  That's not good though: most parties have at least one song that I really think is a true stand-out.

The rooms are also interesting....but not great.  While it was nice to see a reimagined, futuristic island and the subtle details in the designs were appreciated by me, I feel Club Penguin played it too safe.  In two thousand years, we are supposed to believe that only a few rooms remain, with more than 3/4 of the island obliterated off the map.  Now, if this had been played into the plot (as in, "Protobot is such a menace - he destroyed most of our home!") I would be sort of alright with this.  But this was merely Club Penguin trying to cut down on their workload by just giving us a few party rooms.  I mean three of the rooms - the space ones - are virtual carbon copies of each other.  Now, I do understand that there are a limited amount of artists on the team who have other things to think about during their work hours.  But if this same team - with probably less employees, mind you - could give us a nice sized mansion less than two years ago at the Halloween Party while doing virtually the same responsibilities on the side, they should be able to deliver a fair amount of rooms for this party.  I'm not asking for every last one....just at least enough to get the updated major buildings in there.

But with that being said, the rooms also weren't that memorable.  Like the 2013 Medieval Party before it, all of the rooms had the same pallet of limited colors.  White, blue, and pink were heavily overused and their constant inclusions made things boring.  Additionally, the Team wasn't too creative when making their futuristic metropolis; many of the rooms - and such things as the robots beyond them - were filled with cliches.  Some things weren't thought through, either: I mean, a Squid DJ?  What does that have to do with anything?

As a side-note, I have to say a museum would have been a very memorable inclusion.  A few of the articles in the futuristic newspapers stated that those in the future were mesmerized by the past we now dwell in.  A museum, similar to the one seen at last year's 8th Anniversary Party, would have been a great way to show some old CP items and maybe even foreshadow some events that are to come in future months.

But enough with rooms: what about the items?  Well, those, too, fall in the "eh" category.  Most of the items made for the event feel uncreative and cliched.  The Protobot costume is pretty neat, though.

The little game at the party was pretty neat.  It was simple, but at least it had an element of challenge.  The robot designs were alright, though nothing to write home about.  The pieces of armor used to go into battle were an interesting addition, and at least each one had its own unique traits.  The personalization aspect was a nice touch, though one that didn't do much for me because it was so generic.  If we had been able to have a multi-step process - similar to furniture and hoodie designing - it would have been a little more interesting.

The story at this party was promising, but didn't amount to much.  The final Protobot battle, while not as overhyped as the recent Puffle Gala and Muppet Theater, was albeit a weak finale that didn't feel too special.  I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Club Penguin has created such great characters.....now if only they could learn how to actually use their resources.

All in all, this party was yet another mixed bag.  While not as infuriating with its use of events as March and April's parties, the Future Party still proved to be a let down when it came to acting on its intriguing premise.  Among this year's parties, it ranks third, in my opinion.  Since it didn't have much to get mad about in it, it comes before the unfair Fair and the repetitive Prehistoric Party.  However, the Muppets Takeover places second merely because it had good items and Silly Hat Week rains supreme because of its lax view of itself.  If this party comes back, it needs some major improvements.  And I think it's within Club Penguin's power to complete them with flying colors.

As Billybob would say, Waddle On!
